US First Lady Melania Trump says she has secured an agreement between Russia and Ukraine for a temporary ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and the evacuation of civilians, the White House has said.
The ceasefire is scheduled to begin on October 29, 2026, with both countries agreeing to suspend military operations in the city during the humanitarian process.
In a statement via the White House website, on Friday, October 23, Melania said the agreement was aimed at providing urgent assistance to residents, particularly elderly people who remain in the frontline city amid continued attacks and shortages of essential supplies.
“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water,” she said.
The US First Lady said residents were also facing limited electricity, mined roads and regular military attacks, warning that humanitarian access and the evacuation of elderly people would have been difficult without her intervention.

“It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible,” she added.
According to the statement, Melania and her representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to establish the terms of the agreement, including its objectives, technical procedures, timing and implementation.
She said she acted as an “Exclusive Intermediary” in initiating discussions and coordinating the two sides towards the agreement.
Under the arrangement, civilian representatives from Russia and Ukraine are expected to visit residents in their homes to assess their needs and coordinate assistance.
“Non-military, civilian leaders from both countries will work together to visit Oleshky residents in their homes and determine the level of assistance they require,” Melania said.

“Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” she added.
The First Lady also said she had secured the participation of an American media organisation to accompany the Russian and Ukrainian teams and document the process.
“I have also secured an impartial American media organization to accompany and document Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground throughout the process. This will play a significant role in ensuring that the wishes of each family are faithfully respected,” she said.
Melania said the situation in Oleshky came to her attention during a private discussion at her *Fostering the Future Together* event in New York City, held during the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
She explained that she and her representative subsequently activated a communication channel established with Russia and Ukraine during six previous reunification efforts involving 34 children.
“My representative and I immediately leveraged the communication channel we established with Russia and Ukraine through the previous six reunifications of 34 children,” she said.
“Both nations promptly assigned teams to coordinate the complex mechanics involved, including demining. All parties have worked around the clock since that moment,” she added.
The planned ceasefire is limited to Oleshky and is intended to facilitate humanitarian assistance and civilian evacuation, according to the statement.
