Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood might be headed for the transfer portal after the 2026 season ends.
Underwood, the former top high school recruit, got benched on Saturday for freshman Tommy Carr, who put on a show and helped the Wolverines get the win over Penn State. While Carr only threw for 47 yards and ran for 36 yards in the victory, he did just enough to make Michigan take a hard look at keeping him on the field for good.
If the job is now Carr's to lose, it wouldn't be a huge shock for Underwood to look elsewhere for 2027.
Where might he land? The options are plentiful in the portal for a talent like Underwood, even if he's underperformed so far. We've just taken a loose guess at five teams that would hypothetically make sense.
Oklahoma
Once John Mateer graduates, the Sooners could use a splash in the portal to compete for the starting job in 2027. While Underwood has some work to do to earn another starting gig, his potential is tantalizing enough for a school like Oklahoma to bring him in and see if he's able to capture his pre-college hype.
Oregon
The Ducks will most likely lose Dante Moore to the NFL Draft after the season. Could the program go for Underwood in the transfer portal as a possible replacement? We're curious how Underwood would look in Oregon's offense and if that offensive staff could get more out of him than the ones at Michigan did.
Ole Miss
With Trinidad Chambliss set for the 2027 NFL Draft, could Ole Miss make a play for Underwood? Like with Oklahoma, a move to the SEC would be pretty striking. However, it's not hard to see another coaching staff so enamored with Underwood's potential that they take a flier on him in the transfer portal.
Indiana
It'd be something if Curt Cignetti's staff could be the one to fix Underwood's issues and help him live up to his potential. With Josh Hoover out of eligibility after this season, could the Hoosiers take a chance on Underwood in the portal and see if they can unlock the vision that colleges had for him coming out of high school?
Arkansas
The Razorbacks could use some star power for Ryan Silverfield. Could Underwood find his next home at Arkansas? Having that promising of a talent join Arkansas would be a major coup for the program, even if, again, Underwood still has plenty of work to do to live up to his unreal potential. He'd give Arkansas fans some hope for 2027, at least.
