ISLAMABAD, Oct 15 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising Pakistan’s agriculture and food sectors through scientific research, technological innovation and improved support for farmers to strengthen national food security.
In his message on World Food Day, observed on October 16 under the theme “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow,” the prime minister said climate change, water scarcity, declining soil fertility, rising production costs and disruptions in food supply chains posed significant challenges to food security.
He stressed that innovation and modern technology were essential to building resilient agricultural systems and meeting the nutritional needs of present and future generations.
The prime minister said the government was integrating scientific research and technological advancements with farmers’ traditional knowledge and practical experience to improve agricultural productivity.
He highlighted the establishment of the National Agricultural and Food Security Council (NAFSC) to promote coordinated national efforts, including research into improved seeds, agricultural mechanisation, digital systems, efficient irrigation, and stronger links between farmers and markets. He added that the government was also prioritising affordable credit for smallholder farmers through engagement with private banks.
Emphasising that food security involved both the availability and nutritional quality of food, the prime minister said the government was strengthening storage infrastructure and expanding agricultural processing facilities to reduce losses, enhance the value of produce and improve export opportunities.
He said better utilisation of Pakistan’s agricultural resources, including crops, halal meat and fisheries, could help boost exports and reduce dependence on imports.
He urged provincial governments, farmers, researchers, the private sector, development partners and civil society to work together towards a strong, inclusive and sustainable food system.
