Italian energy company Eni has started operations at the second phase of the Meleiha project in Egypt’s Western Desert through Agiba Petroleum Company, its joint venture with the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC).
The project marks a major milestone in developing a new gas processing hub within the Meleiha Integrated Concession. It will significantly increase the capacity to process gas produced from fields in the area, supporting domestic gas production and maximising the utilisation of Egypt’s energy resources.
The new facility is designed to process up to 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.
The second phase of the Meleiha project includes an integrated infrastructure system comprising development wells, production gathering networks, main transmission pipelines and a dedicated gas export pipeline.
These facilities will connect new production to Egypt’s existing gas infrastructure, enabling faster monetisation of resources and improving operational efficiency.

The start of operations underscores Eni’s role as a strategic partner to Egypt and reaffirms the company’s longstanding commitment to strengthening the country’s energy security by developing the potential of the Western Desert’s diverse resource base, one of the most promising areas of Egypt’s energy sector.
The project is also expected to increase the availability of natural gas for the domestic market. It has been developed in accordance with high standards of operational excellence, safety and environmental sustainability.
Eni has operated in Egypt since 1954 and is currently the country’s largest energy producer, with hydrocarbon production of approximately 242,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day on an equity basis in 2025.
Through its subsidiaries and joint ventures, Eni operates across the energy sector, including exploration, development and production activities in the Western Desert, the Gulf of Suez, the Nile Delta and the Eastern Mediterranean.
