The President of the Republic, Keiko Fujimori, stated today that, through its pro tempore presidency of the Andean Community (CAN), Peru will deepen integration within this regional bloc, aiming to transform it into a vehicle for promoting the development and well-being of the populations in its member countries.
In a ceremony held at the Government Palace, the Head of State received the pro tempore presidency of the CAN from her Ecuadorian counterpart, Daniel Noboa.
"Our task now is to deepen our integration and ensure that the Andean Community serves as a vehicle to promote the development and well-being of our populations, while also inviting new members to join this space," she declared.
Furthermore, she emphasized that Peru assumes this responsibility with a firm commitment to preserving the progress achieved by the regional organization and continuing to strengthen cooperation mechanisms among its members.
"Count on Peru to lead this process," she stressed.
Regional challenges
During her remarks, the President noted that Peru has proposed a work plan aimed at addressing the primary challenges facing the countries of the Andean Community.
Key priorities include combating transnational organized crime, preventing and managing the effects of the El Niño phenomenon, and strengthening trade and investment.
She also highlighted the need to foster integration in air and port infrastructure among member countries, as part of efforts to consolidate regional cooperation.
Fujimori suggested that the current political landscape offers an opportunity to advance these objectives and translate the alignment between the governments into tangible benefits for their citizens.
"I also believe we must seize this political moment—and the shared visions held by our four governments—to turn that vision into concrete results for our populations," she affirmed.
Andean Integration
On another note, the President recalled that, over the course of 57 years, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Bolivia have built one of the most robust integration processes in Latin America.
She highlighted that the Andean Community features a free-trade area, common rules, and a community legal framework that governs the various aspects of this process.
Finally, she expressed her appreciation to the Government of Ecuador and President Daniel Noboa for their stewardship of the *pro tempore* presidency over the past year, and for their commitment to strengthening Andean integration.
