Power couple Gail and Kabelo Mabalane are using their combined star power to tackle one of South Africa's most pressing but under-discussed health issues. The actress and the Kwaito legend have joined forces with pharmaceutical company MSD to shine a light on the Human Papillomavirus, better known as HPV.
As part of the campaign, Kabelo, who officially announced his return to music, released a track titled Lalela Masithi HPV, which translates to "Listen when we say HPV," blending his signature sound with a message designed to reach as wide an audience as possible. Gail took to social media to share behind-the-scenes clips of her husband crafting the song in the studio, using the post as a platform to unpack the facts behind the virus.
Why the Mabalanes feel this campaign is personal
Gail was candid about what drew the couple to the campaign. Having witnessed the devastating effects of cancer within their own family circle and close relationships, she said partnering with MSD to amplify awareness was an easy decision to make.
"This HPV awareness campaign has made me realise that this is a shared responsibility," she said, stressing the need to normalise open conversations about the disease. "The facts are sobering, making it clear why it's time to raise the VOLUME."
Among the statistics she highlighted: eight out of ten active adults are predicted to contract HPV at some point. While the virus can clear up on its own, a persistent infection carries serious risks.
The award-winning actress warned that the virus can lead to various forms of reproductive system cancers and severe health complications in both men and women. She also pointed out that 99% of cervical cancer cases in women are directly linked to HPV infections.

Kabelo's history of using music for social good
This is far from the first time Kabelo has put his platform to work for a cause bigger than himself. Over the years, the Kwaito icon and pastor has run mega-marathons to raise funds for South Africa's education and literacy challenges, and has championed campaigns addressing crime, substance abuse, and gender-based violence. The new track fits naturally into a career defined as much by community upliftment as by chart success.
Gail described the song with characteristic warmth.
"Of course it's Kabelo who's created yet another banger; however, this time for the collective greater purpose of an awareness campaign about the Human Papillomavirus a.k.a HPV."
She urged her followers to stream the track and use it as a starting point for educating themselves, making clear that proactive health measures and honest conversations about HPV have the potential to save lives.
