A Jubo Dal leader was hacked to death by a group of 15–20 armed assailants in Narayanganj's Sonargaon upazila last night (21 October).
The deceased was identified as Zahirul Islam Fakir, president of the Kalapaharia Union unit of Jubo Dal in Araihazar upazila and son of Mohammad Abdur Rahman from the same union.
The attack took place in the Char Kishoreganj area of Sonargaon at around 10pm, according to local residents cited by police.
The assailants repeatedly hacked Zahirul before fleeing the scene, leaving him critically injured. Locals rescued him and took him to Munshiganj Sadar General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Although politically active in Araihazar, Zahirul lived in a rented house in Munshiganj Sadar and ran a pharmacy in Char Kishoreganj.
His nephew, Ismail, alleged that the killing was planned because Zahirul was being widely discussed as a potential candidate in the upcoming Union Parishad election.
He said Zahirul had previously been hacked and injured in front of Araihazar Police Station, prompting the filing of a case.
"Although he survived that attack, I suspect the same people have now killed him," Ismail said.
Khorshed Alam, member secretary of Araihazar upazila Jubo Dal, condemned the killing and demanded justice. Describing Zahirul as a dedicated party leader, he said Zahirul had often expressed fears that he might be killed, although the party was unaware of any specific disputes involving him.
Ataul Karim, a physician at the emergency department of Munshiganj General Hospital, said Zahirul had sustained multiple sharp-weapon injuries. Preparations were under way to transfer him to Dhaka for advanced treatment, but he died before the transfer could take place.
Abdul Barik, officer-in-charge of Sonargaon Police Station, said police had launched an investigation after receiving information about the killing. Efforts were under way to arrest those involved.
