LinkedIn is stepping up efforts to reduce low-quality AI-generated posts after research found that more than 40% of long-form content on the platform was AI-generated.
CNN reports that the Microsoft-owned professional network increasingly views generic AI-written posts as a problem because they can make the platform feel repetitive and less useful.
A July report from AI-content research firm Pangram found that more than 40% of long-form LinkedIn posts were AI-generated, compared with around 30% on X and Medium and lower levels on Reddit and Substack.
LinkedIn Says Generic AI Posts All Start to Sound the Same
LinkedIn Editor-in-Chief Dan Roth said low-quality AI content creates a business problem because many posts begin to sound alike.
If users repeatedly encounter generic posts instead of content that teaches them something or provides real insight into a professional connection, LinkedIn risks losing their attention to other platforms.
LinkedIn previously offered AI tools to edit or rewrite posts, although it has recently scaled those features back.
Users Have Flagged AI Slop More Than 1 Million Times
In August, LinkedIn introduced a button allowing users to report posts that “seem like AI slop.”
LinkedIn said users clicked the option more than 1 million times during its first two weeks.
The company is now using its own AI systems to identify low-quality AI-generated content and reduce how widely those posts are distributed.
If LinkedIn’s model flags a post as AI slop, the platform can make it less likely to appear beyond the author’s direct connections.
Former Journalists Are Training LinkedIn’s AI
LinkedIn created a team largely made up of former journalists and social media specialists to help identify what useful and authentic posts look like.
These experts are helping train LinkedIn’s AI systems to distinguish between valuable content and generic AI-generated material.
The company also has a creator management team that Roth described as “content therapists” for executives, subject-matter experts and other users.
Roth said some creators now write posts using tools such as Claude or Gemini, publish them on LinkedIn, and then ask why they performed poorly.
His team’s response is often to ask whether the creator actually enjoyed reading the post and whether it sounded like them.
AI Slop Views Have Dropped 40%
LinkedIn says its efforts are already having an effect.
The platform reported last month that improvements to its detection systems had caused a 40% decline in views of content classified as AI slop.
LinkedIn is not opposed to AI-generated assistance altogether. Roth noted that not everyone is naturally a strong communicator.
However, posts that are not edited, personalized, or made more authentic are now less likely to reach a large audience on the platform.
