Spire Motorsports is putting Carson Hocevar’s black, white and red Chili’s Chevrolet back on the No. 77 for Sunday’s Freeway Insurance 500 at Phoenix Raceway. It’s the sixth Chili’s start of 2026, and the paint family with the best résumé in the shop: a version of it went to Victory Lane at Talladega in April.
Good news for the merch trailer. The better question is whether the car under the vinyl can finally turn a Phoenix qualifying lap into a Phoenix result, because Hocevar’s record in the desert has a very specific shape. Fast on Saturday. Forgettable by Sunday night.
Three Phoenix Qualifying Runs, No Payoff
Hocevar’s last three Cup starts in Arizona began from third (March 2025), sixth (November 2025) and seventh (March 2026). Spire’s numbers put that 5.33 average starting spot third among all drivers over the span, and the best of any driver without a pole in that stretch.
His best Phoenix finish in six Cup starts is still 15th, from March 2024.
This spring showed how quickly a good Saturday can disappear. Hocevar qualified seventh, then the team found an alternator problem in final pre-race checks on Sunday morning. The fix sent the No. 77 to the rear before the green flag. He struggled to crack the top 10 early, held track position for much of the afternoon, then fought handling problems late and finished 20th.
Hocevar isn’t spinning it. “We have qualified really well there the last couple years,” he said in Spire’s race advance, before adding that the team “just haven’t necessarily gotten the finishes for one reason or another.”
Phoenix is a bad place to have that problem. It’s a flat one-mile track, so the car has to turn on mechanical grip rather than lean on banking, and the balance that works on low-fuel, fresh-tire qualifying laps can drift badly over a long green-flag run. Starting up front buys clean air and a good pit stall. It doesn’t fix a car that tightens up or gets loose as the tires wear. That is the gap Hocevar keeps falling into, and it’s the one Luke Lambert’s crew has to close on Sunday.
Why Spire Thinks the Flat Tracks Have Turned
Hocevar’s optimism has a specific source. “We have been fast at the flat tracks,” he said. “We were pretty good at Gateway, which has similar characteristics, so we feel good about it.”
Gateway is a fair comparison: another flat oval, in the same rough length range, where braking and corner exit decide a lot. It’s also why the whole field is dealing with a procedural change this weekend. NASCAR’s new post-qualifying front-brake rule for Phoenix traces straight back to what happened there.
The season numbers back up the “fast but” story. Through 32 races, Hocevar has one win, six top-fives, 11 top-10s and 198 laps led, with an average start of 12.1 and an average finish of 16.1. That four-spot slide from green flag to checkered is the whole year in miniature. To be fair to him, both averages are more than five positions better than they were at this point in 2025, so the trend is real. Last week at Charlotte followed the usual script: started 10th, ran in the top 10 for long stretches, finished 14th.
Spire’s Phoenix history doesn’t offer much cover either. The organization has two top-10s in 31 Cup starts at the track, and both belong to Michael McDowell: eighth in 2025 and ninth this spring. Hocevar would be the first Spire driver not named McDowell to crack that list.
What 24 Points Means in a Chase With No Cut Line
Phoenix is race seven of the 10-race Chase. Hocevar, who locked up his first Chase berth at New Hampshire, comes in 10th in the standings, 24 points behind ninth.
Under the 2026 format there are no eliminations. Nobody gets cut after three races, and the title goes to whoever has the most points after the Nov. 8 finale at Homestead-Miami. That changes what a mid-pack Chase driver is racing for. Hocevar isn’t trying to survive a cutoff. He’s trying to climb a ladder where every position at the end of the season counts, and where the math rewards big days far more than safe ones.
A win is now worth 55 points, against 35 for second. One strong Phoenix run could erase the 24-point gap to ninth. Another 20th-place day could leave him looking at the backs of drivers he out-qualified. With four races left, including this one, there isn’t much room to keep leaving speed on the table.
Why Chili’s Keeps Showing Up
The Phoenix version of the car runs pepper vines across the roof and sides, a nod to Chili’s founder Larry Lavine and the chain’s early look. Chili’s dates to 1975 and is now the flagship of Dallas-based Brinker International, with about 1,600 restaurants in 29 countries and two territories.
The business side explains why the brand keeps coming back. Brinker’s fiscal 2026, which ended June 24, brought a 9.2% rise in Chili’s comparable restaurant sales and 3.6% traffic growth for the year. CEO Kevin Hochman said the fourth quarter completed five straight years of Chili’s same-store sales growth. A company on that kind of run is happy to keep doing what’s working, and a car that already has a Talladega win and a fan-favorite paint job is an easy line item to defend.
That Talladega win in April came in the “Ride The ‘Dente” car: Hocevar beat Chris Buescher by 0.114 seconds in his 91st Cup start, giving Spire its second Cup victory after Justin Haley’s at Daytona in 2019. Spire had already signed Hocevar to an extension in February that runs into the next decade, with Chili’s named among the partners behind his 2025 season. Driver and team are locked in for the long haul, and Chili’s keeps finding reasons to stay on the hood. Phoenix is just the next place to prove the car is more than a good-looking qualifier.
What to Watch Sunday
- Qualifying, then the morning. Another top-10 start is likely based on recent form. After the spring alternator scare, a clean pre-race check matters just as much.
- Long-run balance. Watch where the No. 77 runs 30 to 40 laps into a green-flag run. That’s where his Phoenix finishes have slipped away.
- The gap to ninth. Twenty-four points is one good day of work. Track it stage by stage.
- Spire’s three-car picture. McDowell owns both of the team’s Phoenix top-10s. If the No. 77 is running in that company late, the conversion finally happened.
The Freeway Insurance 500 goes green Sunday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. ET on USA Network. For the title picture at the front of the field, see our full Phoenix preview.
