Sammy Smith survived a chaotic afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway to win Friday’s Love’s RV Stop 225 for Spire Motorsports. Meanwhile, championship contenders Kaden Honeycutt and Layne Riggs both finished in the Top 10, keeping their title battle firmly in focus.
Smith drove the No. 7 Chevrolet to victory in a race filled with shifting leaders, major incidents and late-race drama. More importantly, his victory came during a critical stretch of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Chase.
However, the biggest championship takeaway belonged to Honeycutt and Riggs. Honeycutt extended his points advantage slightly, while Riggs remained within striking distance with two races left.
Smith delivers when it matters
Smith started on the front row alongside pole-sitter Ty Majeski. From there, the race quickly developed into a typical Talladega battle, with drivers trading the lead through the draft.

Giovanni Ruggiero won the opening stage before trouble disrupted his afternoon. Tanner Gray captured the second stage as the lead continued changing hands.
Meanwhile, the field faced several tense moments. A first-stage crash collected multiple trucks, while additional incidents and tire problems complicated the race for several contenders.

As the final stage unfolded, Honeycutt moved to the front with 29 laps remaining. Soon afterward, the leaders continued swapping positions as drivers searched for the right lane.
Smith eventually took control with 13 laps remaining. A late caution following a crash involving Thomas Annunziata and Grant Enfinger added another obstacle before Smith secured the victory.
For Spire Motorsports, the result delivered a major win on one of NASCAR’s biggest stages. For Smith, it was a strong finish to an afternoon that demanded patience and precise positioning.
Honeycutt extends his championship advantage
While Smith celebrated, Honeycutt and Riggs had their own reasons to be encouraged. Both championship contenders finished inside the top 10 and avoided the kind of disastrous result that can derail a title campaign at Talladega.
Honeycutt entered the race with a 39-point advantage over Riggs. Following Friday’s finish, the TRICON Garage driver increased that lead slightly.
Consequently, Honeycutt heads toward the final two races with the upper hand. Still, Riggs remains close enough to keep the championship fight alive.
The pair have separated themselves from the rest of the field throughout the Chase. Christian Eckes entered Talladega well behind the leading duo, making this increasingly a two-driver contest.
Nevertheless, Talladega demonstrated how quickly circumstances can change. One crash, mechanical issue or poorly timed pit stop can erase months of progress in a matter of seconds.
Two races remain in the championship fight
The Truck Series now moves closer to its season finale, with Martinsville Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway remaining on the Chase schedule.
For Honeycutt, the immediate objective is straightforward: protect the points lead and avoid costly mistakes. Riggs, meanwhile, needs to gain ground before the final race decides the championship.
Both drivers have shown they can compete at the front. Now, consistency and execution will determine who ultimately lifts the trophy.
Smith may have owned the celebration at Talladega, but the championship remains a battle between Honeycutt and Riggs. With two races remaining, the title fight is far from over.
