British sausages and pies could become easier to find in Gibraltar if a new UK-EU food agreement removes some of the post-Brexit barriers affecting supplies from the UK.
The proposed deal could help supermarkets on the Rock restore some familiar British products after new import requirements introduced under Gibraltar’s treaty with the European Union caused concern about possible gaps on shop shelves.
The UK government expects its wider agreement on food safety and plant health with the EU to take effect in mid-2027, subject to the outcome of negotiations. The arrangement is intended to reduce paperwork, costs and routine border checks for a wide range of food and agricultural products.
Why British food supplies have become more complicated
Gibraltar’s new relationship with the EU took a major step forward on July 14, when the UK and EU signed a treaty governing the territory’s future relationship with the bloc. The agreement began provisional application on July 15, bringing changes to the way goods move between Gibraltar and neighbouring Spain.
Although the treaty is intended to support the movement of people and goods across the border, retailers have had to adapt to new customs, documentation, labelling and sanitary requirements.
Morrisons, one of Gibraltar’s main supermarkets, warned customers in July that some British products could become temporarily unavailable while its supply arrangements adjusted to the new rules.
The store stocks around 20,000 products and said its teams had spent months reviewing its range to check compliance with EU requirements. It also began sourcing more local and regional goods and using alternative supply routes, including through Ireland, to help maintain availability.
Morrisons reassured customers that most of its range would remain available, although the selection could change while the new system was being implemented.
Sausages and pork pies among products covered
Fresh sausages and burgers are specifically mentioned by the UK government as products whose trade with the EU is expected to resume under the proposed sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agreement.
The deal would cover a much wider range of goods, including meat, dairy products, eggs, fish, seafood, fruit, vegetables and certain plants and plant products. It would also address rules covering food safety, animal health, plant health, food labelling and other agricultural standards.
Under the proposed arrangements, closer alignment with EU rules should make it easier for businesses to trade across the Channel. The UK government says the agreement would remove export health certificates and routine checks currently required for certain products, helping to reduce costs and delays. That could benefit retailers importing British food and potentially make supply chains more reliable.
However, the agreement is still being negotiated, and its precise requirements and implementation timetable have not been finalised. The government’s guidance refers to trade with the EU generally; it does not provide a separate guarantee that every British product will be available in Gibraltar.
What could it mean for Gibraltar shoppers?
For residents who prefer British brands, the prospect of fewer trade barriers could eventually mean a wider choice of familiar products. Fresh sausages and meat pies are particularly useful examples because the UK government has named them specifically. Other British groceries could also benefit from smoother trade, depending on the rules applying to each product.
The changes could be important for many, not just Gibraltar shoppers. Spanish residents and British visitors who cross the border to shop at supermarkets on the Rock may also notice differences in the range of goods available.
Nevertheless, the proposed deal does not guarantee lower supermarket prices. Reduced paperwork and transport delays could cut costs for suppliers, but retailers would determine how any savings affected prices paid by shoppers. It doesn’t yet guarantee that a new deal could be ready in time for Christmas pud this year.
Nor does it mean that all current supply problems will disappear immediately. Businesses will need time to adapt, and individual products must still meet the relevant food-safety and other legal requirements.
Retailers await greater clarity
Morrisons has already said it hopes the situation will improve as the new UK-EU trading arrangements develop. The supermarket has stressed its commitment to maintaining a broad range of products for Gibraltar customers while adapting to the new requirements.
The next stage will be to establish exactly how the wider food agreement applies to supplies destined for the territory and when any practical changes can take effect.
For now, British sausages and burgers offer a tangible example of what the negotiations could mean for shoppers. If the agreement delivers the expected reduction in trade barriers, some familiar products that have become more difficult to supply could be easier to bring back to Gibraltar’s shelves.
