Rupeni Caucaunibuca, once regarded as one of the most naturally gifted wingers in world rugby, has spoken candidly about losing his entire fortune after retiring from the sport and rebuilding his life behind the wheel of a taxi in Fiji.
Known as the "Bua Bullet," Caucaunibuca burst onto the global stage at the 2003 Rugby World Cup, scoring stunning tries against France and Scotland that left fans and opponents alike in awe. Despite earning only eight international caps for Fiji, his pace, power and footwork earned him a reputation that transcended the small number of appearances.
His club career in France proved equally impressive. Stints with Agen and Toulouse brought him considerable wealth, and in 2006 he was named France's Player of the Year.
How Caucaunibuca lost everything
The transition out of professional rugby proved far more difficult than anything he faced on the pitch. In the 2019 documentary *Oceans Apart*, Caucaunibuca made a frank admission about his financial downfall.
"I regret it. I should have kept a few hundred thousand for after rugby but it's too late, I've already spent it all, for nothing," he said.
He attributed the bulk of his spending to alcohol and supporting others financially. His troubles were compounded by a reported €250,000 penalty tied to a disputed pre-contract arrangement in France, leaving him in a precarious position upon returning home.
Caucaunibuca is not alone among elite rugby players to have faced serious money difficulties after retirement. England's 2003 World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio has also experienced bankruptcy, underscoring the financial vulnerability many former internationals encounter once their playing careers end.
The rugby community gives him a second chance
With no income and a family to support, Caucaunibuca received a lifeline from within the sport he once graced. In 2019, former Samoa international Daniel Leo, working alongside Pacific Rugby Players Welfare, helped coordinate a fundraising effort that collected more than $20,000 on the Fijian star's behalf.
The funds allowed Caucaunibuca to establish a taxi operation in the Labasa area. In a fitting tribute to his rugby legacy, he named the service the Bua Bullet, the same nickname that once made defenders across Europe and the Pacific tremble.
