The Mizoram government plans to recruit 100 regular primary school teachers during 2026 as part of its efforts to improve learning outcomes and strengthen the state's elementary education system, Education Minister Vanlalthlana announced on Friday. Addressing the general conference of the Mizoram Primary Teachers' Association (MPTA), the minister highlighted the challenges facing school education in the state and outlined measures being considered to improve students' academic performance and address teacher recruitment requirements. He also discussed proposed changes to the Mizoram Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET), including provisions for in-service teachers to obtain the required eligibility certification before 2028.
The minister also outlined the steps being considered to help serving teachers meet the eligibility requirements for continuing in the profession. The Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) is working on arrangements that would allow in-service teachers who have more than five years of service remaining to appear for the Mizoram Teacher Eligibility Test before 2028. In addition to these arrangements, the government is considering easing the assessment requirements applicable to in-service teachers and conducting the MTET twice a year. Vanlalthlana indicated that the government was exploring ways to ensure that teachers have a fair opportunity to qualify for the test, although the proposed changes have not been confirmed as final decisions.
Regarding recruitment, Vanlalthlana said the state government had already sanctioned the appointment of 671 teachers and was working towards recruiting another 100 regular primary teachers during the current year.
Further details regarding the recruitment process and the proposed eligibility-test reforms are expected to depend on announcements from the relevant authorities.
