Budapest’s Advent Basilica Christmas market has won Europe’s top Christmas market title for 2026, adding another international accolade to its collection. The popular festive attraction opens on 13 November, bringing Christmas cheer back to the Hungarian capital.
Budapest’s Advent Basilica Christmas market has been named Europe’s most beautiful Christmas market for 2026 by European Best Destinations (EBD), beating competitors from across the continent. The award ceremony took place in Monaco on 9 October, with 40 Christmas markets reaching the final.
The latest recognition is particularly prestigious, as Advent Basilica won in the organisation’s ‘All Stars’ category, which brings together previous award winners. The Budapest attraction has already earned the title of Europe’s Best Christmas Market four times, further cementing its reputation as one of the continent’s leading festive destinations.

Why does Budapest’s Advent Basilica stand out?
Set in front of St Stephen’s Basilica, one of Budapest’s most recognisable landmarks, the market combines traditional crafts, festive food and drink, and spectacular lighting to create a distinctive Christmas atmosphere.
According to EBD, the balance between culture, gastronomy and the setting is a key reason for its continued popularity among international visitors. The combination of the historic basilica, carefully designed decorations and culinary offerings makes the market an attraction that draws tourists back year after year.

Maximilien Lejeune, EBD’s managing director, said the event had repeatedly succeeded in delivering the beauty, magical atmosphere and originality that visitors expect from a Christmas market.
He also highlighted how closely the market’s promise matches the experience visitors encounter in person, with Budapest providing the ideal backdrop for the festive event.
The market’s growing international reputation has also attracted attention across the travel media. Forbes included Budapest in its coverage of Europe’s most beautiful Christmas markets for 2026, placing the Hungarian capital firmly on the festive travel map.

Advent Basilica celebrates its 15th anniversary
The 2026 edition marks the 15th anniversary of Advent Basilica. Over the years, it has collected several major international awards, including the title of Europe’s Best Christmas Market in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
In 2024, it also received the distinction of being named the best European Christmas market of all time.
Budapest has enjoyed further success with its other major festive attraction, the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas market. In 2025, it was named Europe’s most popular Christmas market in an analysis by travel experts at Tollwayr, reportedly beating established destinations such as Strasbourg, Vienna and Prague.
The Hungarian capital also secured second place in Travel and Tour World’s ranking of the world’s best Christmas destinations in 2025, behind only New York. Budapest was the highest-ranked European destination, ahead of cities including London, Strasbourg, Nuremberg and Vienna.

When does the Budapest Christmas market open in 2026?
This year’s Advent Basilica Christmas market opens on 13 November 2026, welcoming visitors to the square in front of St Stephen’s Basilica.
The festive attractions will also extend to Vörösmarty Square, where the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas market offers another popular destination for Christmas shopping, traditional Hungarian food and seasonal treats.
For tourists planning a winter city break, the two markets provide an opportunity to experience Budapest’s festive atmosphere while exploring some of its best-known central locations.
