The Jacksonville Jaguars have started to shape their roster for their Week 6 showdown against the Houston Texans.
When the Jaguars take on the Texans, it will be their first divisional game of the season and their second straight game played in London.
Jacksonville earned a dramatic walk-off win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and now heads across town to “host” Houston at Wembley Stadium.
The Texans were a popular pick to overtake the Jaguars in the AFC South and make the franchise’s first Super Bowl, but have stumbled out of the gate with a 1-4 start, earning their first victory over the 0-5 Tennessee Titans in Week 5.
Jacksonville has an opportunity to bury the Texans in the division race in Week 6. A victory would send the Jaguars to 5-1 and put them four games up on Houston after only six games.
The Jaguars have begun their preparations for their Texans by making several roster moves on Tuesday.
Anton Harrison Placed On IR
The biggest move Jacksonville made on Tuesday was placing starting left tackle Anton Harrison on injured reserve.
Harrison suffered what looked like a season-ending knee injury against the Eagles. He had to be carted off the field in the third quarter, and the non-contact injury did not look good.
On Tuesday, it was reported that Harrison would undergo arthroscopic knee surgery when the team returns home from London, and the surgery would reveal the extent of the damage and determine how much time he would miss.
Ian Rapoport reported the best-case scenario would be an absence of 3-5 weeks, but could also require a 3-4 month recovery time, which would keep Harrison out for at least the rest of the regular season.
By placing Harrison on IR, he will have to miss at least Jacksonville’s next four games. Expect Walker Little to take his place as Trevor Lawrence’s blindside protector.
New Long Snapper Signed To Practice Squad
On Monday, it was announced that the Jaguars were signing experienced long snapper Jacob Bobenmoyer to replace Ross Matiscik, who left the Eagles’ game early with a shoulder injury.
Defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton took over for Matiscik and had a memorable performance, including executing a good snap on Cam Little’s walk-off 57-yard field goal.
On Tuesday, the signing of Bobenmoyer became official, but he was signed to the practice squad, not the 53-man roster.
Matiscik isn't expected to be placed on IR, so the team will be elevating Bobenmoyer from the PS on a game-by-game basis until Matiscik returns.
Bobenmoyer is able to be elevated three times before he must be signed to the 53-man roster in order to be used on game day.
Kaevon Merriweather to Active Roster
Instead of using the open roster spot created by Harrison being placed on IR on Bobenmoyer, the Jaguars used it on safety Kaevon Merriweather.
Merriweather was elevated from the practice squad against Philadelphia after second-year safety Caleb Ransaw was placed on IR earlier in the week, and starting S Eric Murray was listed as doubtful with a concussion.
Murray would not play, and Merriweather was able to provide the secondary with experienced depth. He played 21 defensive snaps (34%) and also saw 12 snaps on special teams (44%).
Now he is officially part of the roster and will likely continue to see a significant role in the absence of Ransaw.
