The weight-loss drug Mounjaro will be funded by Cyprus’s national health system from today for patients with type 2 diabetes and, in limited cases, obesity, health officials have announced.
The drug, also known as tirzepatide, has been added to the list of medicines covered by the General Healthcare System (Gesy), the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO) said.
Mounjaro will be prescribed by designated specialists once the HIO has approved a pre-authorisation request. Until further notice, it will be dispensed only through hospital pharmacies.
The HIO received 1,747 requests for the drug, covering 972 patients, between January 1 2025 and August 20 2026.
Of the 422 requests assessed so far, 238 were approved and 184 were rejected.
