The Yobe State House of Assembly has voted in support of the creation of State Police among 26 alteration bills sent to it by the National Assembly for ratification.
The decision was taken at plenary on Thursday presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio, after lawmakers debated the proposed review of the 1999 Constitution.
The National Assembly had transmitted the bills to all 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration, as part of the constitutional process which demands approval by at least two-thirds of state legislatures before any amendment can scale through.
Commenting after the voting, Mashio explained that the Assembly's endorsement of State Police was intended to lay a legal foundation for states to establish their own policing structure to complement the Nigeria Police Force.
According to him, the move aligns with current nationwide conversations on repositioning the security architecture to effectively respond to new and complex security threats.
"The 26 bills touch on different sections of the Constitution and are designed to respond to present-day governance realities," he added.
Mashio stressed that by backing the State Police bill, the Yobe Assembly has shown its resolve to support constitutional reforms that will boost security and deepen community-based policing.
