UCF has dropped off significantly over the last couple of weeks.
After getting off to a hot 3-1 start to the season, the Knights have now dropped two straight: a 27-17 loss at Houston and a 42-18 loss at Oklahoma State. Giving up 69 points across two games is bad enough, but they also haven't had their starting quarterback, Alonza Barnett III. Barnett has been sidelined with a hamstring injury suffered in Week 2 against Pittsburgh.
Next up, UCF will face their biggest test yet, with the Knights set to host the undefeated BYU Cougars on Saturday. Unfortunately, it looks like they'll have to manage that game without Barnett as well. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Barnett is not expected to play in the BYU game as he continues to recover from his injury, meaning backup Keyone Jenkins will get the start for a fifth straight week.

Jenkins hasn't looked awful since taking over as the starter. In six appearances (four starts), he's completed 70.3% of his passes for 806 yards and eight touchdowns with three interceptions, along with three rushing scores. But Barnett was brought in to be the starter for a reason, and after two straight losses, UCF probably would have liked to have him back under center.
Barnett transferred to UCF from James Madison ahead of the 2026 season after establishing himself as one of the top Group of Five quarterbacks in college football. He led the Dukes to the College Football Playoff last year, earning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and first-team All-Sun Belt honors. He finished the season with 2,806 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns, and eight interceptions, along with 589 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns.
His first season at UCF has been limited to just two games, in which he recorded 344 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and one interception, along with 22 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

Barnett is the more experienced and explosive dual-threat option at quarterback, and one capable of elevating the offense. Jenkins has had some bright moments, including completing 19 of 20 passes against TCU and going for 265 yards and four touchdowns against Oklahoma State, but the Knights have gone just 2-2 with him as the starter.
Against a No. 2-ranked BYU team, Barnett's playmaking ability would have given UCF another weapon on offense. Instead, Jenkins will have to lead the way against one of the hottest teams in the country.
