The management and staff of Connaught Teaching Hospital have expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Minister of Health, Dr Austin Demby, and the Ministry of Health leadership for providing free transportation buses for hospital staff.
In a statement issued by the University of Sierra Leone Teaching Hospitals Complex, Connaught Hospital management described the initiative as a thoughtful intervention that has brought relief, dignity and renewed motivation to healthcare workers.
The hospital noted that the buses are already making a significant difference in staff welfare, punctuality and healthcare service delivery.
For many healthcare workers, particularly nurses and lower- and middle-level staff residing in the far eastern and western parts of Freetown, commuting to work had been a daily challenge. They often struggled with overcrowded poda-podas, long waiting times and high transport costs, sometimes arriving late and exhausted, with their uniforms dirty before the start of their shifts.
According to the hospital, the free buses have improved punctuality, attendance and staff morale, with workers now arriving earlier, looking neat and better prepared for duty. This has also contributed to smoother shift handovers and improved continuity of patient care.
Expressing her joy, Senior Matron Madam Fatmata Kanjia-Jalloh said: “I am one of the happiest people because my nurses, who constitute the majority of our workforce, now come to work early to relieve their colleagues, and they also appear neat.”
Management said the initiative goes beyond transportation, representing an investment in the dignity, well-being and productivity of healthcare workers.
The hospital added that the intervention demonstrates the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery through improved staff welfare. It also contributes to the success of the 300 Days of Activism Campaign by improving workforce readiness and promoting more efficient, patient-centred care.
In expressing its appreciation, the hospital management said: “To Dr Austin Demby and his dedicated team, we say thank you! When we care for those who care for others, we strengthen the entire healthcare system. Thank you, Honourable Minister. Connaught Hospital is grateful!”
