Joseph Gerard Gallant, 62, of Gardiner Mines, was arrested on July 16, 2026, one day after he allegedly entered the Dominion Credit Union wearing a mask and demanded money from a teller at the counter.
Cape Breton Regional Police later reported that no one was injured in the robbery and the suspect left with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Officers arrested Gallant in Victoria Mines and charged him with robbery, wearing a disguise with intent to commit an indictable offence and operating a motorcycle while prohibited.
He was also charged with three counts of breaching his probation conditions stemming from an Aug. 21, 2025, conviction for assault, and an Oct. 29, 2025, conviction for dangerous driving and fleeing police.
Gallant was released on conditions after posting a promise to pay $1,000.
He is now expected to return to Sydney provincial court on Oct. 27 for election and pleas on the charges.
