Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices have reached a record high in Pakistan due to supply disruptions and border closures, while authorities remain silent over an issue affecting millions of people.
LPG distributors said the price had climbed to Rs. 600 per kilogram in hilly areas and Rs500 per kilogram in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Irfan Khokhar, chairman of the LPG Distributors Association, said a domestic LPG cylinder was being sold for Rs7,200 in hilly areas and Rs6,000 in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He warned that prices could rise further in the coming days, adding to the financial burden on households that rely on LPG for cooking and heating.
Khokhar said the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had fixed the October price at Rs279 per kilogram, with the official price of a domestic cylinder set at Rs3,350.
He criticised OGRA for failing to address the wide gap between the official rates and market prices, alleging that consumers were being overcharged.
To bring prices under control, Khokhar urged the government to use the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) terminal and arrange immediate LPG imports to improve supplies and stabilise the market.
