Nobody Wants This creator Erin Foster hears your cries and knows you want more of her hit Netflix rom-com. And not only is she open to keeping Noah (Adam Brody) and Joanne’s (Kristen Bell) love story alive, she even has an idea for a new character that could bring a whole new level of messiness to this now-blended family.
**Spoilers ahead for Nobody Wants This Season 3, now streaming on Netflix**
For Foster, whose own real-life relationship is the loose inspiration for the series, beyond the newest season, there is still a lot of story to tell, even after the show’s LA lovebirds tied the knot (we said spoiler alert!) in the Season 3 finale. With Noah and Joanne having made it down the aisle and narrowly avoiding World War III between their families, Foster tells DECIDER that they are ready to get a writers room together if Netflix calls.
“Yeah, I mean we’re, you know, we’re always open,” the Emmy-nominated executive producer said of a potential Nobody Wants This Season 4. “I think as the season comes out and we see people’s reactions, then, you know, we wait for the call, and we’re ready to go if they want us.”
One of the key reasons fans are pushing so hard for a fourth season is because of the unresolved storylines involving Noah and Joanne’s respective family members. At the heart of the unfinished business is the ever-growing complicated relationship between Morgan (Justine Lupe) and Sasha (Timothy Simons). While the first two seasons kept the pair strictly in the friend zone, Season 3 takes the “loser siblings” to New York City where they get swept up in the moment and hook up after a heart to heart about their flailing love lifes.
Part of exploring the Sasha and Morgan storyline felt like the opportunity presenting itself together at the right time, Foster says, while another part of it includes Esther (Jackie Tohn), finally being in a space to explore a relationship of her own. To move this particular storyline along, Foster and the writers’ room put a special focus on ensuring that this happened — which some fans have been rooting for since Season 1 — in an organic and meaningful way.
“It really, it really reveals itself, you know? I mean, we really needed to clean up him and Esther in Season 2 and end with him and Morgan as friends with an asterisk of like ‘it’s complicated,'” Foster explains, adding that it was because Morgan saw Sasha finally finding his own out in the dating world that she looked at him with “And Morgan is just struggling to be herself and be with someone who appreciates her for who she is. And she doesn’t wanna be in a toxic relationship so it all just kind of merged together in the perfect way. I came together in such a special episode that Jenni Konner and Megan Mazer wrote.”
It is worth noting that before Morgan and Sasha ever take their friendship to the bedroom, the duo have a series of serious conversations about the relationship struggles they are currently facing, which reveals some major residual trauma that Morgan is still dealing with from her marriage. Explained only in brief mentions and asides, Morgan has talked about her toxic ex-husband, who once ruined a birthday trip to New York.
Between previous mentions and an invisible hand-style role in Season 3, Episode 7, it’s understandable that fans might think the writers are breadcrumbing the audience into seeing Morgan’s ex in a future season. So, can we expect to see the man who soured Morgan to the concept of true love in Season 4 or beyond? You bet, Foster says.
“Yes, definitely. It’s funny, because kind of every season we’ve thought, ‘Do we bring her ex-husband into the mix?’ And we haven’t really known which way we want to go with it. And so I do think that if we do a fourth season, we would want to meet him,” she explains.
Let’s hope Netflix gives the team a call.
