By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The escalating gang crisis in Haiti is raising serious security concerns across the Caribbean, including Belize, as a multinational force struggles to restore stability in the troubled CARICOM nation.
The latest concerns follow an ambush involving Salvadoran soldiers serving in Haiti, with four soldiers reported missing following the attack.
The incident marks the first major assault on the Gang Suppression Force, a United Nations authorized multinational security mission tasked with confronting heavily armed criminal gangs.
According to Reuters, the mission has approximately 2,000 personnel deployed, significantly below its authorized strength of 5,500.
The force replaced an earlier Kenyan led security mission that struggled with shortages of funding, equipment and personnel.
Belize was among the Caribbean countries that offered support to the earlier international security effort.
Haiti’s deteriorating security situation has become a regional concern because of its potential implications for migration, organized crime and the movement of illegal weapons throughout the Caribbean.
Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, armed gangs have expanded their control over large sections of Port au Prince, forcing an estimated 1.4 million to 1.5 million people from their homes.
The crisis comes as Belize examines its own security challenges involving transnational criminal organizations.
Prime Minister John Briceño recently confirmed that Belize is holding preliminary discussions with the United States about possible cooperation under the Shield of the Americas initiative, which focuses on combating drug cartels and organized crime.
While the situations in Belize and Haiti are different, the developments highlight the growing importance of regional security cooperation.
Attention remains focused on the search for the four missing Salvadoran soldiers as the multinational mission faces another major challenge.
