Koggala, Oct 25 (Daily Mirror) - Ten people, including students, were injured and hospitalised following a collision between a train and a bus at an unprotected railway crossing in Habaraduwa this afternoon (25).
The accident occurred near the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum in Koggala when a train travelling from Beliatta to Maradana collided with the rear of the bus.
The bus was carrying more than 50 passengers, including 14- and 15-year-old students, parents and teachers, who were returning from an educational trip organised for students attending a tuition class in Kottawa.
The injured students were rushed to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital and other nearby hospitals for treatment.
According to police, the railway crossing where the accident occurred is not equipped with safety gates and relies on warning lights and bells to alert road users to approaching trains.
Habaraduwa Police have arrested the bus driver in connection with the accident. Further investigations are underway.
