Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday (October 13, 2026) paid homage to Tyagi Sankaralinganar on his death anniversary and remembered his contribution to renaming Madras State as Tamil Nadu.
In a post on X, Mr. Vijay said Sankaralinganar sacrificed his life after observing a 76-day hunger strike through peaceful means, with the renaming of the State as Tamil Nadu as his principal demand.
Without yielding on his principles and the pride of self-governance of the Tamil land, he proved that the identity of the Tamil people was greater than life itself. His unparalleled sacrifice deserves to be inscribed in the pages of Tamil Nadu’s and India’s history, Mr. Vijay said.
