The Strategy Behind Verified by Waya
Kampala, Uganda | NEWS CORRESPONDENT | From Mirembe Beddings and Curtains to Nsambya Furniture Workshop and other established names, Ugandan brand developer Tonny Lukwago is building a professional portfolio around business identity, digital visibility and online reputation.
For many businesses, attracting customers is only one part of building a sustainable brand. Establishing a consistent identity, maintaining credible business information and developing an effective online presence can be equally important in a competitive marketplace.
These are among the areas that Waya Boy, whose legal name is Tonny Lukwago, has focused on through his branding work and the development of Verified by Waya.
His work with businesses such as Mirembe Beddings and Curtains and Nsambya Furniture Workshop has been part of a broader effort to help enterprises strengthen their public presentation and address the practical requirements associated with running a business. He has also worked with public figures and other brands, including Director Sozo, Subie Queen, Errands Runner and Mummy Gadgets.
The range of these projects illustrates the direction of his professional activities: combining branding and marketing with business documentation, online presence and reputation management.
Addressing the foundations of a business
Waya Boy’s interest in business development grew from his experience building his own identity as a musician. He began working on his brand during Senior Four, developing connections and learning about the role of marketing in establishing recognition.
In 2025, he began helping friends who were struggling to develop their brands. The work gradually expanded into supporting other individuals and businesses.
His approach moved beyond logos and promotional materials to include the foundations that support a business’s credibility. He encouraged clients to consider business registration, trademark protection and tax compliance alongside their branding and digital marketing.
These areas serve different purposes. Business registration establishes a business through the relevant legal process, trademark protection can help safeguard distinctive brand identifiers, and tax compliance addresses obligations imposed by the relevant authorities.
By bringing these considerations into conversations about branding, Waya Boy sought to help businesses understand that public presentation and formal business requirements are separate but complementary concerns.
Mirembe Beddings and Curtains and Nsambya Furniture Workshop
Mirembe Beddings and Curtains and Nsambya Furniture Workshop are among the businesses Waya Boy identifies as part of his branding portfolio.
The businesses operate in different parts of the home and furniture market, where customer confidence, product presentation and clear communication can influence purchasing decisions.
For businesses in these sectors, an online presence can help customers discover products, understand what is available and communicate with sellers before making a purchase. A consistent brand identity can also make it easier for customers to recognise a business across different channels.
Waya Boy’s work with these enterprises forms part of his wider effort to strengthen their branding and public presentation.
His approach emphasises the need to consider the business as a whole rather than treating marketing as an isolated activity. Documentation, brand identity and online communication each contribute to how an enterprise presents itself to potential customers.
The work also illustrates the practical setting in which he developed Verified by Waya: helping existing businesses address branding challenges before turning his experience into educational content for a broader audience.
Extending the work to public figures and other brands
Waya Boy’s client work has also included Director Sozo, Subie Queen, Errands Runner and Mummy Gadgets.
Working with public figures can present different challenges from those associated with retail businesses. An individual may need to maintain a consistent public identity, communicate professional activities clearly and manage their reputation across multiple platforms.
Businesses, meanwhile, must explain their products and services while maintaining clear information about their operations.
Although the requirements differ, both situations involve questions of identity, communication and public trust.
Waya Boy’s work brings these concerns together through branding, marketing and online image management. The variety of people and businesses he has worked with also reflects the different contexts in which he applies his professional experience.
Why online presence matters
Social media has become an important communication channel for businesses and individuals seeking to reach audiences.
A business may use its online profiles to showcase products, respond to enquiries, communicate offers and maintain relationships with customers. Public figures may use similar platforms to share professional updates and communicate with followers.
However, maintaining a profile is only one part of managing an online presence. Consistent information, clear branding and an understanding of platform policies are also important.
These are among the subjects Waya Boy addresses through Verified by Waya, the TikTok platform he created to educate people about branding, business registration, digital marketing and the use of social media.
His content also covers platform rules, updates and approaches to account growth, helping users understand that visibility should be pursued within the requirements of the service they use.
From client work to public education
The development of Verified by Waya followed Waya Boy’s experience helping friends and businesses in 2025.
As he encountered recurring questions about branding, documentation and online credibility, he decided to establish a TikTok account where he could share information with a wider audience.
The platform connects his work with individual clients to an educational purpose. Rather than addressing every question through a private engagement, he can use public content to explain general principles that may be useful to entrepreneurs and creators.
Its subjects include the importance of business registration, the role of trademarks, brand consistency, digital marketing and understanding TikTok’s policies.
The approach also reflects his belief that entrepreneurs should understand the foundations of their brands instead of concentrating exclusively on their appearance online.
A parallel background in journalism
Alongside branding, Waya Boy has developed experience as a freelance journalist. His work involves interviews, reviewing public records and checking information before publication.
He identifies New Vision, Daily Monitor, Nile Post, PML Daily and The Independent among the publications he has worked with, alongside other media outlets in East Africa and beyond.
Freelance journalism has also required him to manage practical responsibilities such as billing, contracts, travel and marketing his services.
Journalism and branding have different professional objectives. Reporting requires independence, accuracy and appropriate verification, while branding focuses on how an individual or business communicates its identity.
Understanding the distinction is important when working with clients who want to improve their public profiles. Promotional materials can explain a business’s own claims, but independent journalism must retain its editorial standards.
Waya Boy’s experience in both fields forms part of the professional background behind his work in digital communication.
Building a brand beyond its logo
A central element of Waya Boy’s approach is the idea that branding should not end with visual design.
A logo can help a business become recognisable, but it does not establish that the business is registered, that its trademarks are protected or that its online information is accurate.
Those considerations require separate attention.
Through Verified by Waya, he encourages businesses to think about the documents and processes that support their operations, alongside the way they present themselves to customers.
He has also worked on websites, online content and the publication of stories about individuals and businesses. These activities form part of a broader approach to digital visibility, in which different platforms serve different communication purposes.
A website can provide information about a business, social media can support ongoing engagement, and independent editorial coverage can offer context about a person’s work or an enterprise’s activities.
Each has a distinct role in establishing an online presence.
Understanding the name Verified by Waya
The name Verified by Waya connects two elements of Waya Boy’s identity.
Waya comes from his established professional name, while “Verified” reflects the platform’s focus on helping clients ensure that relevant aspects of their brands are in order.
The name represents his own branding and educational service. It should not be confused with an official verification programme operated by TikTok or another social media company.
Social media verification, business registration and trademark protection are separate processes with different criteria and responsible authorities.
Explaining these distinctions is part of the educational direction of the platform. For entrepreneurs, understanding which process applies to a particular need can help prevent confusion and unrealistic expectations.
The next stage of his professional development
Waya Boy’s work with businesses and public figures has helped shape the direction of Verified by Waya.
His experience began with developing his own music brand, expanded into assisting friends and businesses, and eventually led to a TikTok platform focused on education and brand development.
The businesses and individuals associated with his work provide examples of the different settings in which he applies his services. His journalism background and digital marketing experience add further dimensions to that professional profile.
The next stage for Verified by Waya will depend on the quality of its services, the usefulness of its educational content and the outcomes achieved by the businesses and individuals it supports.
For Waya Boy, the central objective remains helping people understand the relationship between a credible business identity, appropriate documentation and effective online communication.
His work with Mirembe Beddings and Curtains, Nsambya Furniture Workshop and other clients provides the context for that mission, while Verified by Waya gives him a platform through which he can communicate its principles to a wider audience.
