Tura, October 23: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, participating in the SPARK State Summit 2026 in Tura on Friday, defended government spending on youth development programmes, saying initiatives aimed at nurturing students’ confidence and life skills should be viewed as an investment in future generations rather than an expense.
The SPARK initiative, implemented by the state government through the Education Department, seeks to equip students with essential life skills, confidence and the ability to navigate challenges beyond the classroom.
Responding to criticism over the allocation of public funds for such programmes, Sangma said their long-term impact could extend well beyond the students directly involved.
“We are not spending money; we are investing,” he said. “The outcome of what we are doing today, we can’t even begin to imagine how much impact it will have, not just for the students who are here, but for generations to come.”
The Chief Minister said SPARK currently reaches around 10,000 children and young people, but its influence could spread further through their families, peer groups and local communities.
He said participating students could create a multiplier effect by sharing what they learn and inspiring others, allowing the benefits of the programme to extend across the state.
Sangma said initiatives such as SPARK were intended to build confidence, nurture individual potential and encourage young people to contribute positively to society.
