Long before prospects step onto the field on NFL Sundays, teams evaluate draft candidates through intense formal interviews at the NFL Scouting Combine. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, those pre-draft meetings used to feature a secret weapon, franchise icon, and Hall of Fame defensive tackle "Mean" Joe Greene.
Appearing on the “New Heights” podcast, former Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed a legendary pre-draft story recalled by host Travis Kelce.
When Kelce walked into his formal Combine interview with Pittsburgh prior to the 2013 NFL Draft, he noticed a strikingly intimidating room setup. Beneath the single dimly lit wall light sat Greene, looming quietly over the evaluation process.
"First of all, you're not a real football guy if you didn't recognize who that was," Tomlin joked on the podcast, explaining that the seating arrangement was far from an accident. "And if you did recognize who it was, then it certainly was a component of intimidation, dude."
Tomlin confirmed the exact placement was deliberate: "Hey, by design, first of all."
The psychological tactic served a dual purpose for Pittsburgh's front office. First, it immediately tested a prospect's football IQ and appreciation for NFL history to see if they recognized the four-time Super Bowl champion. Second, it created a high-pressure environment designed to gauge how young athletes handled subtle intimidation under the spotlight.
Kelce admitted the tactic worked, recalling how the edge-of-your-seat atmosphere left a lasting impression on him as a prospect.
"I walked out of there like, man, I know I grew up in Cleveland, but it kind of would be pretty dope to be a Steeler underneath that guy as a head coach," Kelce shared.
For Tomlin, blending franchise lore with mind games was simply part of finding players built for Pittsburgh. It remains a classic example of the Steelers' willingness to use their storied history to get inside prospects' heads.
