Houthi attacks lead flight cancellations at Riyadh airport

Around 60% of scheduled flights at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport were anticipated to be canceled on Monday following attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis, according to data reported by Reuters. The weekend assaults have led to significant disruptions, killing at least 12 people and injuring over 300, according to Saudi authorities. The attacks highlight ongoing security challenges in the region, as operations at the airport remain unstable. The cancellations suggest a broader threat to Saudi Arabia’s air connectivity, prompting concerns over potential further disruptions.

Key Takeaways

• Market activity suggests increased concerns about a formal closure of Saudi airspace, with recent attacks highlighting security vulnerabilities.
• The probability of Saudi airspace closure by December 31 has risen to 19% YES, indicating heightened risk perceptions.
• Cancellations at Riyadh’s airport appear consistent with scenarios where further escalations and airspace restrictions could occur.

What to Watch

Observers should monitor announcements from the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and Saudi Air Navigation Services (SANS) for indications of airspace policy changes. Continued Houthi attacks or escalated military engagements involving Saudi Arabia could affect market expectations for airspace closure. Developments in diplomatic or military responses may further influence market pricing on the likelihood of extended flight suspensions or closures.
