Portugal has reinforced its position as one of Europe’s leading destinations, securing more than 30 distinctions at the 2026 World Travel Awards, including Europe’s Leading Destination and Europe’s Leading Tourist Board for Turismo de Portugal.
These awards recognise the country’s diverse tourism offering, from historic cities and cultural attractions to luxury resorts, coastal landscapes and cruises, reflecting years of investment in promoting Portugal internationally and developing a tourism sector focused on quality, innovation and visitor experience.
The latest results highlight Portugal’s continued appeal to international travellers, with Lisbon and the Algarve contributing to its reputation in various tourism markets.
Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards are widely known as the Oscars of the tourism industry, with winners selected through votes from tourism professionals and travellers worldwide, recognising achievements across destinations, businesses and organisations.
International profile
Lisbon secured two major European titles at the ceremony in Montenegro, being named Europe’s Leading City Destination and Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination.
As reported by Lusa, the distinctions recognise the capital’s cultural attractions, visitor experiences and importance as an international cruise port.
Earlier in October, the city was named Europe’s Best Cruise Destination at the World Cruise Awards ceremony in Jamaica. According to the Port of Lisbon Administration, this marks its third win in the category, following previous victories in 2021 and 2024.
The Lisbon Tourism Association (ATL) says the capital’s appeal lies partly in its ability to preserve its distinctive identity while catering to visitors with different interests. Tourism authorities are also encouraging visitors to explore more of the surrounding region rather than focus on the city’s best-known landmarks and neighbourhoods.
António Valle, director general of the ATL, pointed to efforts to improve the region’s tourism offering and promote its cultural heritage and diversity. He also credited the awards to cooperation between the different organisations and professionals involved in the industry.
Luxury resort market
The Algarve also plays a vital role in Portugal’s tourism reputation, particularly through its established luxury resort market.
In the municipality of Loulé, Quinta do Lago is a leading resort destination, known for its golf courses, high-end accommodation, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Its blend of sport, nature, and premium hospitality offers a wide range of experiences, and the resort’s appeal to international visitors reflects the Algarve’s position as a destination for luxury holidays, golf tourism, and longer stays.
Together, Lisbon’s cultural and cruise tourism credentials and the Algarve’s resort offering demonstrate Portugal’s allure across different visitor markets.
Tourism recognition
These latest awards further recognise Portugal and Turismo de Portugal, whose promotional work has helped establish the country as a competitive European destination.
The challenge now is to build on that success by encouraging longer visits, showcasing lesser-known locations and spreading tourism demand across more regions.
For Portugal, the distinctions offer an opportunity to strengthen its international profile while promoting a more varied tourism experience nationwide.
