Rockstar Games is currently preparing for its most ambitious release yet. The studio has focused heavily on the massive open world, characters, and technological upgrades of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6. However, the team also spent considerable time reworking smaller gameplay systems. Interestingly, some familiar features proved extremely difficult to replace behind the scenes. One such feature was the GTA 6 weapon wheel.
Striking the Perfect Combat Balance & Failed UI Alternatives
One major challenge for GTA 6 involved combat realism. Rockstar wanted to perfectly balance the strict inventory limits of Red Dead Redemption 2 with the chaotic action of Grand Theft Auto 5. Consequently, this desire for deep immersion led to substantial experimentation. Developers felt that a traditional weapon wheel might break player immersion. This concern grew especially strong since the new game strictly limits how many weapons a player can carry. As a result, empty weapon slots on a traditional wheel looked unappealing to the team. Therefore, developers actively explored several new UI designs to fix this problem.
According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, Rockstar spent months or even years trying to replace the weapon wheel. Schreier recently visited Rockstar North. There, he spoke directly with veteran developers who spent over a decade on the game. They revealed their attempts to use designs like a Weapon Tray and a Weapon Web. Furthermore, developers even considered removing the weapon-selection interface completely. Despite trying a million different things, none of these specific UI experiments succeeded. Ultimately, the studio abandoned these alternatives entirely. Rockstar decided that the classic weapon wheel remained the absolute best option in GTA 6 for players.

Development Struggles & Final Launch
This extensive experimentation perfectly highlights why GTA 6 took so long to develop. Between 2019 and 2022, Rockstar struggled to establish a clear creative direction. Meanwhile, developers faced immense pressure and exceptionally high expectations.
Nevertheless, returning to the classic UI does not mean the combat mechanics remain completely unchanged. The new emphasis on carrying fewer weapons will significantly alter how players approach enemy encounters. Fans will finally experience these updated gameplay mechanics very soon. GTA 6 officially launches next month on November 19, 2026.
