- Al-Amri renewed Kuwait’s call for pledging international commitments in good faith, respecting the sovereignty of countries and their territorial integrity and settling disputes by peaceful means in a manner that preserves international peace and security and strengthens the rule of law.
Kuwait has affirmed Tuesday its unwavering commitment to respecting diplomatic and consular missions and preserving their safety and their representatives, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law, particularly the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961) and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (1963), said a Kuwaiti official.
Second Secretary at Kuwait’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations Jassem Al-Amri made the statement early Wednesday while delivering the country’s speech before the UN Sixth Committee during the discussion of item 82. International rules related to the protection of missions ensure that they can perform their duties independently and safely and constitute one of the main foundations of sound relations among countries, he stated.
Host countries fulfill their commitments, under Article 22 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, to taking all appropriate procedures to safeguard missions from any incursion or damage, and prevent undermining their security by any means, he said. Article 29 of the convention calls for respecting and safeguarding the diplomatic envoy, while Article 31 ensures the protection of consular headquarters, he noted.
He underlined the necessity for countries to bear international responsibility for internationally wrongful acts attributable to them that include the halt of violations, compensating for damage caused by them and providing guarantees to avoid their recurrence.
Meanwhile, Al-Amri reiterated Kuwait’s strong condemnation of Iran’s blatant drone attack that targeted the US Embassy’s headquarters in March. The attack constitutes a violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty and the sanctity of the mission, and poses a threat to workers, civilians and civilian facilities surrounding the embassy as well as undermines the rules which ensure the continuation of diplomatic relations among countries, Al-Amri pointed out.
Al-Amri further expressed Kuwait’s condemnation of the Iranian assaults that targeted, and jeopardized, the diplomatic and consular headquarters in the GCC states, particularly Saudi Arabia.
He reiterated Kuwait’s full solidarity with the sisterly countries and its rejection of any acts that target missions or turn them into arenas of confrontation or places for settling military scores. He called on Iran to immediately comply with the UN Security Council Resolution 2817 of 2026 and halt its attacks against, and threats to, the region’s states.
Al-Amri also demanded stopping attacks launched by Iran’s proxies and putting an end to support for armed groups which pose threats to the security and stability of countries, out of respect for their sovereignty and the rules of non-interference into their domestic affairs and good neighborliness. He underlined that Kuwait maintains its inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, in line with international law.
Safeguarding the sanctity of diplomatic missions and their representatives is a legal commitment and a necessity for continued dialogue among countries, especially during crises, he said.
Concluding the speech, Al-Amri renewed Kuwait’s call for pledging international commitments in good faith, respecting the sovereignty of countries and their territorial integrity and settling disputes by peaceful means in a manner that preserves international peace and security and strengthens the rule of law.
