After Egypt’s 2-3 loss to Argentina in the World Cup round of 16, national team captain Hossam Hassan and midfielder Mostafa Ziko harshly criticised the refereeing.
Egypt had a 2–0 lead but suffered a dramatic defeat.
Ziko was furious after the match, claiming that the refereeing decisions constantly went against Egypt.
"It's a settled championship. May God defend us," he said.
Hassan also accused the referee of injustice and implied that he had something to hide.
The Egyptian Football Association has now announced that FIFA is banning Hassan for three international matches and Ziko for five.
Egypt has requested FIFA’s justification and will then decide whether to appeal the sanctions.
