He has visited OEM facilities as far and wide as Bristol, Toulouse, and Seattle, and recently enjoyed the milestone of flying his 150th sector as a passenger. Based in Norfolk, UK.
In the early years of commercial aviation, food and drink were all part of the pageantry of taking a flight. While catering plays less of a role today, it is still an important aspect to many passengers, with some preferring to choose their meals on the fly (quite literally!), while others favor the approach of pre-ordering their dish(es) of choice. A recent policy change at
United Airlines has improved the latter move.
Specifically, the
Star Alliance founding member has lowered the distance threshold for flights where economy class passengers can pre-order fresh food, thus opening the service up to hundreds more flights and tens of thousands more flyers every day. This switch means that the policy now applies to several key routes between major United Airlines hubs as the carrier continues to upgrade its offering.
A Lower Threshold
United Airlines confirmed in a statement that it released earlier today that the threshold for preordering fresh food in economy class has been cut from 1,190 miles (1,915 km) to just 900 miles (1,448 km). This represents a reduction of close to 25% and will see the preorder service added to another 420 United Airlines flights every single day. According to the carrier, this equates to 65,000 passengers.
Among the new routes in North America and the Caribbean where United passengers can now preorder fresh food are Denver (DEN) to San Francisco (SFO) and Houston (IAH) to Chicago (ORD) and Washington DC (IAD). Bookable via both United Airlines' app and website, passengers can place their orders five days to up to 24 hours before departure. UA's Chief Customer Officer, David Kinzelman, said that:
"We want our customers to have more of what they value when they fly. (...) Expanding economy meal preorder to millions more customers is one way we're delivering on that."
Monthly Rotations
Food service is all about keeping things fresh, both in the literal sense and with regard to ensuring that the menu does not become repetitive. With this in mind, United Airlines' economy class preorder offering takes the form of a rotating menu that changes every month. Among the dishes that will feature in its repertoire will be the Chicago patty melt by Jeff Mauro of Mauro Provisions, as pictured above.
Other current selections include "a pork mojo burrito, (...) a hot honey chicken and waffle sandwich, and a cinnamon apple waffle, along with United's lineup of signature snackboxes and snacks." Going forward, the monthly rotations are set to feature a wide range of "fresh sandwiches, burgers, pasta, and breakfast options," ensuring that there is something to suit everyone, regardless of when their flight is.
On a general level, preordering food has become an increasingly popular feature of economy class travel in recent years. While, as United Airlines notes, there will occasionally be circumstances whereby certain products are not available, these systems tend to be a good way of ensuring that passengers get what they want, especially in the buy-onboard era. There is also the benefit of being served first this way.
Part Of A Wider Range Of Improvements
As it happens, United Airlines' expansion of its economy preorder offering is not a change that is being made in isolation. Rather, it marks part of a wider range of onboard improvements that the carrier "is making across its fleet to deliver more choice, convenience and value throughout the customer journey." These include the addition of TBS to 200 aircraft to allow its customers to watch more live sports.
Staying on the subject of inflight entertainment, United is continuing its rollout of more seatback screens across its fleet, with 1,000 jets set to be equipped with personal displays by the end of 2027. For passengers who prefer entertainment on their own device, Starlink WiFi is also being rolled out. Returning to the food side, November 1 will see United "refresh its fan-favorite snackboxes with new selections."
