Drikus Coetzee maintained a commanding lead in the Rhino Run endurance cycling race at midnight on Wednesday, 14 October.
After three days on the bike Coetzee had covered 1 170km, and was nearly 100km ahead of second placed Stephane Lombard of France, who had covered 1 084km.
Lombard tried hard to close the gap during Wednesday’s racing after starting the day about 140km behind Coetzee.
He gradually closed in on Coetzee and by 17h00 had narrowed the gap to 45km, but Coetzee got another lease of life to pull further away.
By 22h00 his lead was 90km, but by midnight it was slightly down to 86km.
Julian Klose of Germany remains third after covering 815km, while Sam Harrison of the United Kingdom is lying fourth on 692km, and Rodrigo da Costa of Spain fifth on 623km.
A total of 23 riders from 11 nations are competing in the ultra marathon cycle race which covers 3 050km from Windhoek to Graaff Reinet in the Eastern Cape.
