Following a 302-yard, 3-touchdown performance in a 38-26 win over the Purdue Boilermakers on Friday, Jedd Fisch said that Elijah Brown has done enough to be considered for the Washington Huskies' starting quarterback job, even when Demond Williams Jr. returns from a rib injury he suffered in UW's 41-24 loss to Iowa.
However, despite completing 78 percent of his passes in the victory, Brown was far from perfect, as he threw three interceptions.
"I saw a lot of things that probably were preventable," Fisch said on Monday when asked for an evaluation of Brown's day. "Whether that be by play call, whether that be by protection, by route, by situation. I would say the first one kind of got caught up in the wind, and probably didn't, when we're going that direction, didn't expect it to get caught up as much as it did."
"The second one...they played it well, hats off to Purdue. I thought they did a really good job jumping the slant there, and then the third one, there was a little bit of a miscommunication in terms of the read. I've got to do a better job coaching up those guys so that doesn't happen."
Despite the turnovers, Brown put together an impressive, efficient showing. He was pressured just four times in the loss, and only sacked once, as he got the ball out quickly to Washington's talented unit of pass catchers, including wide receiver Chris Lawson, who took 6 receptions for 103 yards, the first time in his career that he's surpassed triple digits.
As the Huskies look to jumpstart their offense over the final five games of the year, which ranks No. 15 in the Big Ten in scoring (27.9 points per game) and No. 12 in total offense (386.7 yards per game), Brown's ability to make quick, decisive decisions could be exactly what Fisch's unit needs moving forward.
