In her short, but already significant, career as a pop singer, Tyla has displayed a knack for conjuring up and recreating iconic images of the ’90s and early aughts. Remember when she wore a blue variation of Aaliyah’s tiger-print Roberto Cavalli dress from the 2000 VMAs? How about her Britney Spears “I’m a Slave 4 U” cosplay at last year’s Coachella?
There’s a memorable scene in the 2000 film Miss Congeniality, where the characters go out to a night club that boasts pizza, test tube shots, dancing, and most notably, a paint-splatter drum station that suits the venue’s UV black lighting. And I couldn’t help but think that Tyla was inspired by this indelible moment when putting together one of the showstopping sections of her new A*Pop World Tour.

Tyla kicked off her latest headlining tour on October 12.
The “Chanel” singer kicked off her latest concert tour on Monday, October 12, at the Zénith stadium in Paris, France, and one portion of the set felt like a full-blown Day-Glo party. There was industrial scaffolding, black lights, and Tyla’s body was even splattered with neon paint.

Tyla created a neon paint party on stage for her A*Pop World Tour.
To coincide with the setting, Tyla wore a fluorescent bra in orange and highlighter-yellow, with a clementine-hued choker to match. These pieces were paired with a cream, plunging bandage bodysuit and a fluffy micro skirt with tufts that looked like the tentacles of a sea anemone. Finally, she completed her fit with a pair of knee-high leather boots in black.

The set called to mind an iconic scene from Miss Congeniality.
As Tyla continues to carve out her own space in the pop sphere, the Y2K aesthetic appears to still be her happy place. And I’m still eating up the references.
