When it comes to Android Auto, I have always believed that a few thoughtful tweaks can make a world of difference.
However, not every feature deserves to be switched off.
Some Android settings are essential for keeping Android Auto reliable, responsive, and convenient on the road.
Disable the wrong ones, and you might face unexpected disconnections, delayed notifications, navigation issues, or other frustrating glitches.
Location services and precise location
Don't let navigation lose its way
I can't imagine using Android Auto without reliable location services.
Whether I am navigating through unfamiliar streets or heading out on a long road trip, I depend on Google Maps and Waze to guide me.
However, neither app can deliver its best navigation experience if my phone's location settings aren't configured properly.
That's why I always keep Location Services enabled and grant precise location access to my navigation apps.
Without accurate positioning, I could get incorrect location updates, delayed turn-by-turn instructions, or confusing directions at complicated intersections.
I also recommend enabling Google's Location Accuracy feature. It uses additional signals from Wi-Fi networks, cellular towers, and device sensors to improve positioning, particularly when GPS signals are weak.
On my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, I can review these permissions under Settings > Location > App permissions.
I make sure Google Maps and Waze have precise location enabled. It's a small setting, but it makes a huge difference when navigating unfamiliar roads.
Mobile data connectivity
Keep your maps connected to reality
I know Google Maps supports offline navigation, and I always download offline maps before heading out on a long road trip.
However, that doesn't mean I should disable mobile data altogether. Doing so would take away some of the features that make Android Auto useful.
I rely heavily on live traffic information to avoid congestion and unexpected delays.
With mobile data enabled, Google Maps and Waze can access current traffic conditions, suggest alternative routes, and provide updated ETAs.
Without an interface connection, Google Maps can still guide me through downloaded areas, but I lose live traffic updates and alternative routes.
And navigation is only one part of the equation. I also use Android Auto for music, podcasts, and hands-free voice commands.
While my downloaded music works perfectly fine without internet access, streaming services and many Gemini queries require connectivity.
Speaking of Gemini, it received a major upgrade in Android Auto.
You can fire up a song, navigate to a place, create a note, summarize a meeting doc, glance over your tasks, and perform multi-app commands using Gemini.
So, even though I have offline maps as a backup, I prefer to keep mobile data enabled throughout my drives.
Automatic Android Auto startup
Let Android Auto handle the connection
One of my favorite things about Android Auto is how effortlessly it can fit into my daily routine.
I don't want to unlock my phone, navigate through menus, or manually launch Android Auto every time I get behind the wheel.
I want to step into the car, turn it on, and have Android Auto ready to go.
That's where the automation startup setting comes into play.
I can open Android Auto settings > Start Android Auto automatically and configure it to launch when my phone connects to a compatible car.
There is also a separate option to start Android Auto while my phone is locked.
This makes the experience more convenient. My preferred navigation and entertainment apps are available on the dashboard without needing to interact with my phone.
I also keep automatic music playback disabled, since I don't always want music blasting through the speakers as soon as I start the car.
Background activity for essential apps
Don't put essential apps to sleep
I am aggressive about managing background activity on my Galaxy S25 Ultra. I regularly review unused apps, put unnecessary services to sleep, and use Samsung's battery management tool.
However, I make an exception for apps that I depend on while driving.
After all, I don't want Android's battery optimization to interfere with my navigation, music playback, or important notifications.
Aggressive background restrictions can prevent certain apps from working as expected, particularly when they aren't actively open.
On Samsung phones, I recommend checking Settings > Battery > Background usage limits.
Here, I can review Sleeping and Deep sleeping apps and add important applications to the Never auto sleeping apps list when necessary.
For example, I wouldn't want Waze, Google Maps, or my preferred music player, Poweramp, subjected to unnecessary background restrictions.
Not every Android tweak improves driving
Android Auto has come a long way, but even the smartest infotainment system can't deliver a flawless experience if your phone isn't configured properly.
Disabling certain features can save battery life or reduce distractions, but you shouldn’t sacrifice essential functionality.
The next time you decide to give your Android phone a performance or battery-saving makeover, think twice before flipping every toggle.
