Small business owners looking to streamline cross-border transactions have a new tool at their disposal: Open USD (OUSD), a stablecoin launched by Open Standard, now integrated with Stripe. The innovative coin promises to simplify global money movement, allowing businesses to mint and burn OUSD at no cost, thus presenting a more accessible alternative to existing stablecoins that have garnered attention but remained largely underutilized due to high fees.
OUSD, developed by a coalition of industry giants including Coinbase, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe, and Visa, aims to transform financial transactions for small businesses. The rollout comes at a time when many companies are exploring ways to reduce transaction costs, especially for foreign currency exchanges—an area where traditional banking often falls short.
One of the headline benefits of OUSD is that businesses can freely transition between dollars and OUSD without incurring costly “mint” and “burn” fees typically associated with converting between fiat currencies and stablecoins. Instead, Open Standard imposes a small, predictable transaction fee, which enhances financial forecasting and budgeting for small businesses engaged in international operations.
For example, businesses involved in fintech, remittances, or global payroll platforms stand to gain significantly. By adopting OUSD, these entities can leverage its low-cost framework to conduct high-volume cross-border transactions more efficiently. Henri Stern, co-founder of Privy, notes, “OUSD offers businesses better economics than any other stablecoin,” highlighting its potential to reshape small business banking.
Developers interested in creating fintech products can utilize OUSD through Stripe’s robust APIs. This includes tools for building embedded wallets, managing transactions, and issuing stablecoin-backed cards. For instance, Ramp, a current Open Standard partner, utilizes Stripe’s infrastructure to provide their customers with OUSD accounts, enabling them to hold balances, earn rewards, and send money globally anytime.
OUSD can be held directly in Stripe Treasury accounts, which also allow small businesses to spend their OUSD via stablecoin cards and send funds to crypto wallets across over 100 countries. Integrating with Stripe Treasury further enhances this process, as businesses can fund their accounts using OUSD sourced from various crypto wallets, including Tempo, Base, Ethereum, and Solana, as well as traditional fiat methods like ACH, SEPA, and wire transfers.
Despite these benefits, small business owners should consider several factors before diving into the world of stablecoins. Understanding the evolving regulatory landscape around cryptocurrency is crucial, as compliance can introduce complexities. Moreover, while OUSD touts minimal fees, the small transaction cost associated with its use should be weighed against the existing financial infrastructure already in place.
Furthermore, businesses must assess their customer base; international clients may benefit from these changes, whereas companies with predominantly domestic operations might find limited added value. Developing the technical know-how to integrate OUSD-related solutions into existing systems could also pose initial challenges, necessitating potential investment in IT resources or training.
As Stripe continues to innovate with tools like OUSD, the conversation around digital currency becomes increasingly relevant. Small business owners are encouraged to familiarize themselves with such advancements as they present opportunities to reduce costs and enhance operational efficiency. Engaging with new technologies can provide a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving market landscape.
