HYDERABAD
In the wake of the increasing impact of the El Nino phenomenon and the shortage of water in reservoirs, Advisor to the State Government P. Sudarshan Reddy has suggested that the farming community not go for the second (Rabi) crop as drought-like conditions are already prevailing in Telangana.
In a statement, the ruling party MLA from Bodhan stated on Sunday that the State is facing a shortage of drinking water and electricity is also in short supply, and it is the responsibility of the officials of Agriculture, Horticulture, Irrigation, Electricity and Revenue Departments to ensure that farmers do not undertake the second crop.
Stating that the water levels in major reservoirs, lakes and tanks have failed to reach full capacity level due to poor inflows, the levels have fallen further, and the declining groundwater table is making the problem even more complicated. He suggested that urgent measures must be taken to address the situation.
In Nizamabad district, particularly in the Singur and Nizamsagar project areas, the available water is being reserved for drinking purposes. He urged farmers and the public to use electricity carefully and conserve water. He instructed officials to take appropriate measures to ensure regular drinking water supply and prevent wastage.
The Singur project is expected to have water available to meet drinking needs till December 2026. Mr. Sudarshan Reddy asked the officials to prepare plans to manage water resources effectively beyond that period. He expressed concern that the severe El Nino conditions could worsen the situation, if farmers proceed with another crop without adequate water availability.
He suggested the officials to form special committees from village level to create awareness among farmers and the public about conserving water and electricity. He urged farmers to cooperate with the government and the departments concerned to overcome the crisis.
