The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha on Monday staged a protest march from the Andhra Education Society School to the Congress headquarters, Indira Bhawan, in New Delhi, accusing the Congress leadership of shielding party MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual harassment involving 11 Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students.
The protest was held under the banner of the ‘Nari Shakti Hunkar Andolan’, with BJP women leaders and thousands of party workers demanding action against the MP and justice for the alleged victims.
The protesters questioned Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over their alleged silence on the matter. They demanded that Akoijam be expelled from the Congress and called for his resignation from the Lok Sabha.
According to the BJP Mahila Morcha, a report by the JNU Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) had raised allegations of sexual harassment involving 11 female students. The party accused the Congress leadership of failing to take action despite the seriousness of the allegations.
Addressing the gathering, BJP Mahila Morcha president Pratima Bhoumik said the demand for justice would not be silenced, and women would continue to fight for their rights.
She criticised the Congress for allegedly providing political protection to a parliamentarian facing serious allegations and accused the party of taking contradictory positions on women's rights.
BJP Mahila Morcha national vice-president and in-charge D. Purandeswari also questioned the Congress leadership's response to the allegations. She said the reported findings of the JNU internal committee made it important for the party to clarify its position.
Purandeswari also questioned the contrast between Congress leaders' public statements on women's empowerment and their alleged silence over the case. She demanded that Rahul Gandhi take action against the MP and apologise to women.
The protest march began at 11 am from the Andhra Education Society School on Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg and proceeded towards the Congress headquarters at Indira Bhawan, where demonstrators raised slogans against the Congress leadership.
The BJP Mahila Morcha further alleged that some Congress supporters who came out of the headquarters tried to attack women protesters, attempted to assault them and used abusive language. BJP leaders said they opposed the alleged behaviour and handed over one person to the police. These allegations could not be independently verified.
Several BJP leaders and public representatives participated in the demonstration, including Union Minister Annapurna Devi, Minister of State Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, Savitri Thakur and Raksha Nikhil Khadse, along with women MPs, legislators and other party functionaries.
The BJP Mahila Morcha warned that it would intensify its protests if justice was not delivered to the students. It urged the Congress leadership to address the allegations and ensure accountability.
