Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman today (13 October) demanded swift government action over the harassment of former interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at New York's John F Kennedy International Airport, blaming ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina for inciting her supporters.
In a Facebook post today, Shafiqur alleged that Hasina was continuing to incite her supporters to engage in violent activities despite fleeing Bangladesh.
He blamed Hasina for the actions of those involved in the incident with Yunus in the United States.
"The government should take swift and appropriate action in this regard," Shafiqur wrote, alleging that the incident showed how those who had fled Bangladesh were continuing their activities abroad.
Earlier in the day, a 1-minute-5-second video surfacing on social media shows several people approaching Yunus, who was seated in a wheelchair, and shouting slogans at him inside the airport premises.
The protesters were heard shouting, "You are a terrorist" and "Why did you come here?" They also accused Yunus of undermining democracy in Bangladesh.
The footage shows Yunus moving forward with security personnel and associates as the protesters continue shouting at him.
The date and time of the incident could not be independently confirmed as of publication.
