U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a ceasefire in the energy sector.
“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!,” Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social.
He gave no further details.
Financial Times correspondent Christopher Miller writes that Ukraine “has no information” about the energy ceasefire Trump announced. “Just now our repair teams are restoring electricity and water supplies in Kyiv [after Russian strikes],” a senior Ukrainian official close to Volodymyr Zelensky told the FT. “Nobody has heard [about the ceasefire].”
For Zelensky himself, the ceasefire Trump announced came as “news,” he said in a brief interview with Axios. “If President Trump negotiated it with Putin, please tell us when the ceasefire begins. We are ready, and we will accept it,” Zelensky added.
Trump had already announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on September 14. At the time, he said that “Ukraine has agreed not to hit Russian Energy targets” and that “Russia has agreed to do, likewise.” However, the Financial Times later wrote that Trump had apparently jumped the gun with his announcement. Sources who spoke to the FT, familiar with the Kremlin’s position, said Vladimir Putin does not want to conclude an energy deal before winter because he believes attacks on energy facilities during the cold season could force Kyiv into making concessions.
