To Donald Trump’s MAGA movement, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is the perfect distillation of American decay.
Where others might see an American Dream story in her rise from war refugee to Congress, the movement perceives an ungrateful immigrant, a socialist it accuses of enriching herself in a country, the history of which she disdains. Worst of all, it smells fraud and corruption.
That is why the investigations into the progressive Minnesota Democrat have become a test of everyone’s credibility—MAGA’s as much as hers.
Shortly before dawn on October 12, Homeland Security agents searched Omar’s D.C. home in an investigation into her family’s immigration paperwork, leaving with her phone and boxes marked “Seized Property Evidence.”
She has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, accusing Trump officials of politically motivated attacks against her.
A week later, the New York Post and Fox News reported that investigators have obtained DNA evidence.
One Post source called it critical in the most persistent allegation against Omar: that in 2009 she married her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, to help him obtain a green card.
Omar has consistently denied the claim since it surfaced in 2016, and she has not been charged. She called the search an attempt to “weaponize federal law enforcement” and vowed not to be silenced.
For a decade, the allegation has lived where most political accusations do. In Trump’s meandering speeches, in MAGA influencers’ posts, and in fact-checks—unproven and unkillable.
Now it may finally be settled in a laboratory, by a test indifferent to all the noise around it.
If that test proves decisive, it will either vindicate Trump’s base and discredit everyone who stood by Omar as she gained influence in the Democratic Party, or deal MAGA one of the most damaging blows of the Trump era, a gift to the democratic-socialist left.
The battle over Omar is defining for MAGA and it arrives in the twilight of the Trump era.
Two weeks from a term-limited president’s last midterm elections, it is shaping up as MAGA’s final set-piece clash, one Trump has spent seven years leading his movement toward.
The road runs from the 2019 rally where his supporters chanted “send her back,” to a Thanksgiving message last year that vowed to “permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries.”
In the same post, Trump said Omar had probably entered the country illegally because “you are not allowed to marry your brother.”
Omar gathers every warning MAGA has issued into a single file: immigration, fraud, corruption, socialism, fears of a Third World America, and the charge of anti-Americanism.
She is a refugee turned citizen, a founding member of the progressive “Squad,” and a Minneapolis congresswoman in a state the right has made synonymous with fraud schemes involving Somali-run nonprofits, though she has never been implicated in them.
This month, Trump urged Minnesotans to “fight back” against Somali immigrants.
Washington’s top federal prosecutor, Jeanine Pirro, has said her office is also examining Omar’s financial disclosures.
One, filed last year, valued her husband Tim Mynett’s business interests at up to $30 million. Omar later amended the household total to under $100,000, blaming an accounting error.
There is also another immigration probe centered on her late father's paperwork and Omar's real age at the time of her naturalization. He may have misstated it, but that is unproven so far.
If that ends in an attempt to strip her citizenship, Omar would be the most prominent target yet of a denaturalization drive that has produced at least 164 cases in Trump’s second term, against an average of 11 a year opened between 1990 and 2017.
Should MAGA be right about Omar, it will believe it was right about everything else, too.
Omar is finished if the DNA shows Elmi is her brother, and so is the credibility of everyone who waved the claim away: her Squad colleagues, the democratic-socialist left that made her an icon, and the fact-checkers who called the rumor baseless.
The cruelest cost would fall on Somali Americans, whom the right has already fused with her and who would be made to answer for a guilt that is not theirs.
But it cuts both ways. If the DNA shows no sibling relationship, MAGA will have staged its defining battle on a mere internet rumor, and the officials who pronounced Omar guilty in advance will own it.
That includes a vice president who declared in March that she “definitely committed immigration fraud,” and a Homeland Security secretary who asserted last month, without offering evidence, that she married her brother.
An administration that searched a sitting lawmaker’s home three weeks before an election would have much to explain.
Omar’s defenders perhaps underrate the case against her. A federal judge approved the search, and the sealed warrant reportedly lists conspiracy, false statements, and immigration fraud as potential crimes.
Elmi withdrew a marriage-based immigration petition in 2019 after officials, doubting the marriage, asked for more evidence, The Washington Post reported.
And DNA, unlike the online forum post where the rumor began, can be tested in an objective court.
Her critics underrate the case for her. The search broke with the Justice Department’s long practice of avoiding overt steps against candidates close to an election.
Two days before it, Trump suggested to a rally in Tennessee that his vice president was investigating her. Afterward, he said the search had nothing to do with him.
A 2019 review requested by a political appointee in Trump’s first administration found the evidence too thin, per The Washington Post.
Homeland Security investigators under Joe Biden looked at similar allegations and dropped them, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Former officials told Reuters that search warrants are extremely unusual in denaturalization probes. The DNA claims also presently rest on anonymous sources.
Of course, the outcome may settle nothing. If the DNA result never surfaces, if charges arrive only on a narrow count about a teenager’s birth date, or if the case dissolves under seal, both sides will just claim vindication and fight on.
But if these investigations do deliver a definitive answer, one side will have won MAGA’s defining battle. Which one, we don’t yet know.
