IMPHAL, Oct 11: Phungyar AC MLA Leishiyo Keishing has urged Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam to immediately reinforce security in Kamjong district by deploying three companies of security forces, preferably State forces, citing the volatile law and order situation along the border area.
In a letter, Leishiyo referred to his earlier communication to the Chief Minister on September 24, seeking the deployment of three companies of State forces to strengthen security in the district.
He stated that one company of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) had subsequently been dispatched from the police headquarters, but violence erupted at Chassad before the personnel could be deployed on the ground.
According to the letter, armed militants opened fire on security forces led by the Officer-in-Charge of Chassad Police Station on the evening of October 9, when they went to sanitise a cemetery following reports of suspicious movement.
Security forces retaliated, triggering an exchange of fire from different locations.
He stated that a Tangkhul-owned house was burnt down by Kukis at around 10.30 pm on October 9.
The firing intensified after 4 am on October 10, resulting in the burning of 23 houses, including 12 belonging to Tangkhuls and 11 to Kukis.
Two Kukis, identified as Domkhonei Toutang and Michael Haokip, were also killed in the exchange of fire, the letter stated.
He further stated that armed militants from across the border also attacked Ningchou village, located around 15 km from the district headquarters.
Two persons, identified as Ngachanso Ninghen and Leishisan Leishadang, secretary of the Ningchou Village Authority, were shot dead, the MLA said. Expressing concern over recurring incidents of violence in the border area, Leishiyo urged the Home Minister to deploy adequate security personnel to protect lives and properties.
