Gunmen Kill 10 in Nigeria’s Taraba State

Gunmen attacked the Binari community in Taraba State, north-east Nigeria, on Friday 23 October 2026, and police say ten people died. Residents say the toll is higher, with one account putting it at up to 26.

The attack matters to US readers because it bears on security conditions in Nigeria, State Department travel advisories, diaspora families and Washington’s policy interest in the country’s security crisis. The hour is not confirmed, although one resident told BusinessDay the gunmen struck after Friday prayers had ended.

What We Know

Police spokesperson Victor Mshelizah confirmed the attack to Premium Times, calling it “an attack by unknown gunmen that claimed the lives of ten people.” He added: “We currently have men deployed there.”

Both the police statement and the residents’ accounts were reported by Nigerian news outlets, and The Rio Times has not independently verified either. We therefore present the two death tolls side by side and label each by its source.

Residents gave BusinessDay a higher figure, saying up to 26 villagers were killed, including women, children and members of a vigilante group. Police have not confirmed that number.

Resident Mallam Abdul Kumbi told the paper: “The attackers came through Bauchi; they targeted our community at the time Juma’a prayers had finished yesterday.” BusinessDay reports more than 40 motorcycles, each carrying three armed men with guns and cutlasses.

Premium Times reports that houses were burned and large food stocks destroyed. Residents fled to neighbouring communities, and distress calls were reportedly made, but help is said to have come too late.

Police say officers have been deployed to the area, and BusinessDay reports that they were sent to pursue the attackers. No arrests have been reported so far.

What Is Not Known

The final death toll is unclear, because police say ten while residents say up to 26. Some villagers are reported missing, but no number has been given, and injuries have not been reported.

Death tolls in attacks on remote villages can change as the missing are found and communities return. For now, readers should treat ten as the police-confirmed figure and up to 26 as an unconfirmed resident claim.

The attackers’ route is also disputed, and neither account is confirmed by police. BusinessDay says they came from Bauchi State along the Kompany Asusar road.

Premium Times instead says the gunmen are suspected to have crossed from neighbouring Plateau State. The exact time of the attack is also unclear, because only one resident’s account places it after Friday prayers.

The identity and motive of the attackers are unknown, and nobody has claimed responsibility. We do not speculate beyond what police and residents have said.

Where Karim-Lamido Is and Why Attacks Recur

Karim-Lamido is a local government area in Taraba State, in north-east Nigeria. Taraba shares borders with Bauchi, Plateau and Benue states.

The community is spelt Binari in some reports and Binnari in others. It sits in Amar Ward of the Karim-Lamido area.

Parts of north-east and north-central Nigeria have long seen armed attacks on villages by groups commonly called “bandits”. Such attacks often target rural communities, and the details of each incident can take days to confirm.

What It Means for Travelers and US Readers

US citizens planning travel to Nigeria should check the State Department’s current travel advisory for the country before they go. Travellers should also avoid road travel in areas affected by attacks and follow guidance from local authorities.

Security conditions in Nigeria vary by region and can change quickly. Anyone with family or business in Taraba or neighbouring states should rely on official and local sources.

For the Nigerian diaspora in the United States, relatives in Taraba may be hard to reach while communities are displaced. Reports of this kind also keep Nigeria’s security crisis in view for US policymakers and investors who follow the country.

Several things will clarify the picture in the coming days. These include an updated police toll, any arrests, any claim of responsibility, and a clear account of the time and route of the attack.

The Rio Times will update this report as police and local authorities confirm more details. For wider context, see our Africa coverage and Nigeria coverage.
