The Federal Government, through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has added 640MW of transmission capacity with the commissioning of six substations in Kano and Katsina.
This marks a significant step forward in enhancing reliable energy access nationwide.
On Wednesday, four transmission substations were commissioned in Kano State—Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan-Agundi—adding 544MW of wheeling capacity to both Kano State and the national grid.
On Friday in Katsina State, the government commissioned two new 60 MVA, 132/33 kV transmission substations in Kankia Local Government Area, contributing an additional 96MW of transmission capacity to the national grid.

Overall, these infrastructure milestones increase the total additional transmission capacity commissioned during the week to 640MW.
During the commissioning of the Katsina substation, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to reforming the power sector.
“Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda recognizes that economic ambition requires dependable infrastructure,” Tegbe stated.
“By supporting vital investments like this, the administration is laying a stronger foundation for enterprise, employment, and prosperity throughout the country,” he added.
The Minister explained that the newly commissioned facilities would significantly strengthen the network’s ability to distribute electricity across Katsina State and its surroundings, directly boosting both commercial activities and household welfare.
He also urged community members to act as custodians of the public infrastructure.
“Report any suspicious activities promptly to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) or security agencies. These assets benefit your businesses, your neighbors, and your children; protecting them safeguards your community’s future,” the Minister emphasized.
Katsina State Governor Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda praised the completion of the project as a landmark investment in the state’s power infrastructure. He noted that steady and reliable electricity would serve as a catalyst for economic growth, industrial development, and improved public service delivery.
Governor Radda expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for approving the project and commended the Federal Ministry of Power and the TCN for their commitment to its successful implementation.
The commissioning event was attended by senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Power, TCN, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), and members of the Katsina State Executive Council.
