New Zealand have two days to fix a problem that 225 runs could not hide. They host India in the second T20I at Hagley Oval on Saturday, trailing 1-0 in the five-match series after a four-wicket defeat.
Glenn Phillips struck 82 not out from 40 balls and Finn Allen added 45 from 24, yet Sanju Samson's 67 from 33 and a 93-run opening stand with Abhishek Sharma put the chase in India's hands.
Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell dragged the contest back in the middle overs, but Shreyas Iyer's 42 and Naman Dhi's unbeaten 42 from 15 balls finished it with two balls to spare.
The hosts must now find a way through India's top order, and they will have to do it against a side that won without the rested Jasprit Bumrah.

New Zealand vs. India 1st T20I prediction: Who will win?
New Zealand have the better case to level the series at Hagley Oval on Saturday. They scored 225 for 4 and lost by two balls, with Allen dropping a sitter at long-on that let Iyer off on 27.
Their new-ball bowlers conceded 48 in two overs and sent down four wides in the first five, and those errors are correctable.
India, meanwhile, are still adjusting after a long flight, and their bowling looked thin. Bhuvneshwar Kumar went for 49 and Axar Patel for 51, and New Zealand hit 67 off the last 30 balls.
Glenn Phillips and Allen will fancy another big total on a ground they now know well.
TSN Prediction: New Zealand to win.
