If you can’t get enough of the star power and deception in Claudia Winkleman’s Celebrity Traitors castle, the BBC is treating us to a new chapter of an equally nail-biting competition. Celebrity Race Across The World is back for series 4 and the broadcaster has revealed that it will be the ‘wildest race yet’. Swap turrets for breathtaking checkpoints, and murder for breathless sprints, and you’ll arrive at this unmissable series.
This latest series of Celebrity Race Across The World will follow four famous faces and their chosen partners as they embark on the trip of a lifetime from Malaysia to Australia. But with a limited budget, no phones and no internet access, it’s no easy feat. Pop sensation Sam Ryder is one of the stars joining the race alongside his tour manager – and it’s the furthest the competition has ever taken the contestants.
Are you ready to travel the world from your living room? Here’s everything you need to know about Celebrity Race Against The World series 4, including who’s competing and how to watch it.
What is Celebrity Race Across The World about?
The global challenge Celebrity Race Across The World is a starry spin-off of the BBC’s original Race Across The World. In theory, the concept is quite simple: couples must race across borders quicker than their fellow competitors to bag a cash prize. This series is taking the challenge the furthest it’s ever been, as racers will start in Kuching, in the Malaysian state of Sarawak in north-west Borneo, and finish in Melbourne, Australia.
Joining the line-up this series to compete for a charity jackpot are pop star Ella Eyre and childhood friend Nana; veteran sports broadcaster Jeff Stelling and his son Matt; reality TV royalty Princess Andre with her brother, Junior Andre; and singer-songwriter Sam Ryder with his best friend and tour manager, Kaz. Will Jeff’s competitive spirit give him a winning edge? Or perhaps Junior and Princess’s youthful stamina will put them ahead?
It might be simple in theory, but in practice it’s a tough gig. The pairs aren’t allowed to travel via aeroplane and are given a very limited budget to cross entire continents. At the start of the journey, they’re given in cash how much an economy plane ticket to their final destination costs, so they have to be extremely frugal. They have no access to their phones or the internet and have to rely on communicating with locals and maps to get from one place to the next.
Along the way, contestants can take detours to enjoy some astounding experiences, from camel riding across the desert to trekking through waterfalls. But they must balance sightseeing with getting to each checkpoint in speedy fashion, all while keeping within budget.
They can also choose to take on temporary jobs on the way to earn some extra money. It’s an exhilarating watch as the couples scramble to write their names at each checkpoint before their competitors, and we find out at the same time as they do who’s leading the race – but it can change at any point. Some pairs have to pull out of the race altogether due to blowing their budget, and if they’re extremely behind the others, they risk being eliminated.
