At least 15 houses belonging to the Kuki community were set on fire in Kamjong district, Manipur. The incident reportedly forced several civilians to flee their homes and seek shelter in nearby forest areas and an Army camp.
According to reports, suspected militants attacked Chassad village late on Saturday night, October 17, and torched the houses. In a separate attack earlier on Sunday, October 18, a Kuki civilian was killed, and four others sustained bullet injuries after suspected militants opened fire in the village.
Following the incidents, a joint security team comprising the Assam Rifles, Border Security Force and Kamjong Police was deployed in the affected area to bring the situation under control. Security personnel have been tasked with maintaining order and preventing further violence.
Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen condemned the attack and expressed grief over the death of the civilian. She also voiced concern for the injured village leaders and families displaced by the violence.
He described the burning of houses as an intolerable crime and said she had directed the district administration, state police and security forces to remain vigilant round the clock. She stressed the need to protect civilian lives and property and ensure that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, a separate incident was reported at Kamjong district headquarters on Saturday night, where three Tangkhul Naga civilians sustained bullet injuries after rival armed groups allegedly attacked the village.
